The director of the previous two films, Paul King, decided not to direct this installment
Chronology
Paddington returns to Peru to visit his beloved aunt Lucy, who is currently living at the Bear Retirement Home. The Brown family embarks on an exciting adventure when a mystery takes them on an unexpected journey. However, he came up with the idea for this third film and served as an executive producer.
The Paddington we never needed
Following Paddington (2014). My son was 7 when Paddington 2 came out, and it’s one of my favorite movies, so waiting 7 years for Part 3 was hoping that Paddington in Peru would be as good as the first 2 films. It wasn’t.
Birds are practically nonexistent
The now-young adult children have been reduced to very little dialogue. The jokes we used to get from core characters like Mrs. Sally Hawkins brought such a charming quirkiness to the character of Mary Brown that no matter what the franchise says, she was truly irreplaceable.
Banderas’ character and Gina don’t work either, although I don’t think that’s down to either actor
It would have served the series’ legacy better if Mary Brown had simply been absent from this adventure or dropped. The brilliant slapstick of the second film is largely gone or rehashed, but not nearly as well. I may be alone in this opinion, but I really wanted to see a bit of Paddington and Aunt Lucy’s relationship, and that didn’t come through either.
Bring Sally Hawkins back for Paddington 4, then end the series
I was relieved to see “and Phoenix Buchanan as Phoenix Buchanan” in the credits. It’s a shame we go from brilliantly charming and funny to Paddington in Peru.
