Here’s my problem… the lighting stinks
Chronology
A series adaptation of James Patterson’s novel about the complex and brilliant detective Alex Cross. In episode 2, Cross tells Sampson that he smells like “mothballs and old spice.” In real life, Isaiah Mustafa appeared in great Old Spice commercials as “the man your man could smell like.” I started following Aldis Hodge’s career after I fell in love with his character in Leverage. His performance as “hacker” Hardison was excellent, and I totally buy his performance as Alex Cross. The script is strong, the performances are excellent across the board, and the directing and editing are top-notch. I don’t know anyone who spends every waking moment of their life in a room that dark.
Second, the bad guy’s lair
I’ve only watched 40 minutes of the first episode, and I’m already having trouble understanding the details of many scenes. Three scenes in particular stand out. The first is the cocktail bar. I don’t go to cocktail bars myself, but even the darkest restaurant I’ve ever been to had enough light to allow me to see the faces of the people at the table. Would anyone working on detailed plans and designs really do it with such dim lighting?
This isn’t a romantic dinner for two
Surely a perfectionist would want to be able to see everything they’re doing clearly. Third, the house where Alex shows up for dinner. This is a gathering of family and friends. The entire house is dark – the entrance hall, the living room, and the dining room. Plus, every room in the police building is dark.
Why so dark?
Wouldn’t a forensics expert have a very well-lit operating room? If they’re trying to set the mood, I’m more focused on the struggle to see than the plot and dialogue. That’s the choice of many shows in recent years. You know, anyone with visual impairment simply wouldn’t be able to watch this. My father certainly couldn’t.

Still, I could be wrong about the reason for the darkness. I stopped watching How I Met Your Father on another streaming service because it was so dark it was uncomfortable. A quick search of the internet revealed that the problem was with the service, not the show. When the show aired online, the lighting was fine. The new season of Silo is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
