Chronology
Elwood Curtis’ college dream is shattered along a two-lane highway in Florida. Bearing the burden of an innocent misstep, he is condemned to the underworld of Nickel Academy, a brutal reformatory deep in the Jim Crow South. He meets with another guard, with the overview Turner. Two black teenagers form an alliance: Turner provides basic survival tips, Elwood clings to his optimistic view of the world. Against the backdrop of the growing Civil Rights Movement, Elwood and Turner’s existence seems worlds away from the Rev. The polished oratory of Martin Luther King. Despite Nickel’s brutality, Elwood tries to maintain his humanity and awaken a new vision in Turner.
