Struggling with his dual identity, failed comedian Arthur Fleck meets the love of his life, Harley Quinn, while incarcerated at Arkham State Hospital. Lady Gaga, Brendan Gleeson and director-writer Todd Phillips talk about what scared them the most about making a musical sequel. . The subtitle of the film is "Folie a Deux" means “The Folly of Two”; in French. This initially led to speculation that Harley Quinn would appear in the film, which was confirmed shortly after.

The name Folie a Deux comes from the 19th century French psychiatrists Charles Lasègue and Jules Falret. The term was coined to refer to two or more people who share the same insanity or delusion. The foreman of the jury speaks of “the people of New York”; Instead of Gotham City. This is because New York State is the plaintiff in the criminal case, and this version of Gotham City is apparently located in New York State (most versions have Gotham in New Jersey). The film opens with the Looney Tunes title sequence, featuring the Warner Bros. Featuring the cast of AniMat’s The Wicked Discovery of a Lifetime (2022). Merrily We Roll Along Written by Eddie Cantor, Murray Mencher and Charles Tobias. This feels more like a spin-off than a true sequel. Most of its time is spent repeating the original text through court scenes and interviews instead of moving the story forward.
Unfortunately, these episodes don’t hold up to the pace of the film
The writing is serviceable at best, often relying on thin threads that loosely tie one musical dream sequence to another. Joaquin Phoenix’s performance is good, but lacks the raw intensity that defined his performance in the original. Lady Gaga, on the other hand, seemed to deliberately tone down her usual flamboyance to avoid being overshadowed by her, which is understandable, but feels like a missed opportunity for a more dynamic performance. Musical numbers full of energy and spectacle are easily the highlight of the film, where singing and dancing provide a breather to the otherwise slow story. The lack of a substantial plot makes the film feel too long, clocking in at over two hours, making it feel unnecessarily stretched.

Without the gripping psychological suspense of its predecessor, the film struggles to find its footing, making it more of an indulgent showcase of musical theater than a coherent, gripping continuation of the story.
